POETRY FOR EMPATHY: Nostalgia migrante

Dear colleagues and friends,
It has been a long time since I wrote my last blog post. Although the pandemic is still present, many of us will return to teach in-person soon. 2020 was quite a difficult year but somehow it has given us a new impetus, new enthusiasm and the certainty that our work as teachers is fundamental for our society.
Today I have the pleasure and pride of presenting to you, my third poetry book: Nostalgia migrante is a book dedicated to all migrants around the world. Throughout the years I have known many stories of migrants that combined with my own experience have resulted in a collection of 25 comprehensible poems in which the reader can delve into the most intimate views of the migrant experience.
Like my two previous books, Corazón sin borrador and Acuerdo natural, the main objective of Nostalgia migrante is to share experiences in an comprehensible and sensitive way so our students can enjoy poetry at the same time that they become aware of important topics that affect everyone around the world.
Many times I have spoken about the social responsibility of the language class. I believe that in our second language classes we must make an effort to speak and analyze important issues that affect contemporary life. We cannot limit ourselves to just practicing and teaching a second language. We must connect the reality of different cultural groups in order to help our students become true global citizens.
I invite you to read Nostalgia migrante and allow your students to connect with peace, understanding, empathy and solidarity through poetry. Nostalgia migrante can be used with students in Level 3 with Intermediate low and up Spanish proficiency levels.
