A story with an underground plot
As only great storytellers can do it, Sonya Chapman-Morley is able to interwave stories while maintaining the reader’s interest. In La Ciudad de los Muertos, Chapman-Morley tells us in a simultaneous way about the vibrant city of Buenos Aires, a Latin American metropolis known worldwide for its attractive architecture and varied culture, while introducing the reader to the Recoleta Cemetery, a city (of dead) within the city (of alive).
The Recoleta Cemetery is a city without the glamour and the romance of the architecture of Buenos Aires, a small city without the color of the neighborhood of La Boca, an underground city without the harmonic and nostalgic sounds of Tango and a mysterious city without the smells of the Milanese meat that opens the appetite of tourists and residents walking through Buenos Aires´streets during the summer.

The Recoleta Cemetery is like the “B” side of Buenos Aires, where memories and the past populate each space, where the ethereal reigns.
Chapman’s narrative is agile and entertaining, with funny moments in which the reader will laugh thanks to the very interesting and quirky relationships between the characters, but the same time Chapman is able to permeate her story with plenty of suspense, drama, action and even horror.
While reading La Ciudad de los Muertos, your students will be immersed in an underworld that will make them imagine as many stories as those you can find at the Recoleta Cemetery.
La Ciudad de los Muertos is the first CI suspense and horror book I have read. A genre that we know is very much liked among our students.
