I am very happy to announce “Salida 8”, a new CI reader written in collaboration with well known author Jennifer Degenhardt. “Salida 8” is the story of Isaías, a man who travels to the United States in search of work. The story is inspired in the life of a real immigrant and on those places where daily many of them wait for a job opportunity.
It is our intention that reading “Salida 8” will help our students understand the issue of immigration from a human and not a political point of view. Isaías is a man who represents not only the hope of a better life, but also the sadness of having to leave behind people, places and moments that composed his identity for a long time.
“Salida 8” is an innovative book as it combines the story of Isaías told in a narrative way with his thoughts and feelings shared in the form of poetry. On the other hand, “Salida 8” is a book written by two writers with very different life backgrounds and cultural experiences but who nevertheless managed to find a common voice to tell a universal story; the experience of immigration.
“Salida 8” is a story written for Level 1 and 2 Spanish and French students. Jennifer and I hope that giving the opportunity to studnets to read “Salida 8” will help teachers have fruitful conversations about the topic of immigration.
Level 1 reader. 3900 total words, ~197 unique; 85 cognates.
