Making article reading comprehensible

One of the strategies that I consider has made a difference in my upper levels (3,4 and APs) is to make readings comprehensible for my students.  I do this by first taking the original reading and writing a comprehensible version of it.  This is not a summary of the original reading but a resource that will help students feel more confident before facing the actual reading.

After we read together the comprehensible reading I have prepared, I present a powerpoint based on the comprehensible reading.  The idea is to find key images and very few words that will allow us to make the topic relevant to everyone.  I use the powerpoint as a conversation starter that can last for a long time.

After working with the powerpoint I give students a series of 10 questions, but these questions are NOT an assessment of the reading contents but a way to help students reflect on how the reading´s topic directly affects them.  We also use these questions and their answers to keep the conversation going.

To finish, I suggest some group work where students will work on a campaign based on the reading´s topic.  The idea is to convince others about their points of view.

Is not until we go through this process that we proceed to work with the actual reading.  Then the students are prepared and informed, they are now connected and invested in the topic.  One of the main issues especially in AP level classes is that students do not connect with the curriculum or with the suggested/textbook readings.  This is because we do not scaffold them enough.   I suggest you follow the steps I have described.  You will see a difference.

Many of the AP Spanish language teachers, including me work with TEMAS.  That’s why I’m including here a FREE resource where I have made one of this textbook´s readings comprehensible for you to work with your students.

Don´t teach with TEMAS? No problem! Every comprehensible reading includes a link to the original resource so you can also bring the resource to your class.

The reading is “Restauradores de autos con aires de estrella” in Tema # 6, pages 399-400.  Hope you like THIS resource.  You will find the comprehensible reading, the powerpoint, the questionnaire and the group project for free HERE.

The RLA team has also prepared 6 more TEMAS readings, one for each tema/unit.

You can get them as a bundle HERE or you can get them individually, just go to our TPT store: Real Language Acquisition and type Temas Comprensibles 1, 2, 3 … according to the unit you are looking for.

Hope this helps.  Please let me know if you have any questions.  As always I encourage kind comments.  Happy 2021!
