3 ASYNCHRONOUS READING TOOLS IN WORLD LANGUAGES

Hello everyone, in this post I explain a strategy to work on the reading of those essays or newspaper articles that are commonly found in most textbooks for advanced levels. These readings can become a great challenge to our students, but as always, we have the magic to make them interesting and relevant in their lives.

Forums are a relaxed and flexible way to hear the voice of each one of our students.

For the AP level I suggest dedicating at least three 20-minute sessions to each one of the forums that I explain below.

Since the forums do not have to be held synchronously, our students will have the opportunity to participate in them in different ways.

Through email

Through whatsapp

Through Edmodo

Through platforms such as Google Classroom

What is a forum?

Forums are a tool that allows you to establish contact with other network users and generate communication on various topics (readings).

What is the main function of a forum?

Free expression of ideas and opinions of the members.

It allows the discussion of any topic.

It is informal (almost always).

Three types of reading forums for the World Language class

1- Academic forum

In this forum we focus on the reading´s main ideas and on the new information provided by the reading. Students focus on reinforcing and expressing these ideas in their own words.

2- Questioning forum

In this forum, students and teachers have the opportunity to ask questions related to the subject of the reading. To make this a more real and lasting experience, we must allow students to ask expansion and inference questions, leaving out those flat and one-way questions usually found in textbooks.

3- Social forum

In this forum, students and teachers approach the subject of reading from a more personal perspective, sharing anecdotes and personal experiences related to the subject of the reading. This personal perspective makes the topic of reading more interesting and the students see the relevance of the proposed reading.
