ENCOURAGING CRITICAL THINKING IN THE IB AND AP SPANISH LANGUAGE PROGRAMS

I have been working closely with Ms. Viviana Orozco, a Spanish teacher in India, where she teaches IB Spanish at an international school in Mumbai.

While working with Ms. Viviana, we started realizing that even though the IB and AP programs are different there are also a lot of common points that we could work and develop together. Both the IB and AP Spanish programs aim for curriculums that promote and encourage critical thinking. Ms. Viviana and I revised many resources and units presented in different textbooks and we realized that there are many contemporary topics and issues that are not included in them.

Ms. Viviana and I believe that while these are very hard times for our world and for many societies and communities, it is also the best moment to help our students understand inequity, lack of respect and value for diversity, racism and foreign intrusion around the world. We are living in times of challenges and change, and we must help our students analyze social issues from non traditional perspectives.
We have found similarities between the AP and the IB Spanish programs by looking at each of the prescribed contexts and areas. We believe that it is important to address interdisciplinarity in the Spanish class anywhere in the world.

It took us about two months to develop the six units presented in this resource. Each unit includes original readings and activities that will spark relevant and approppriate class discussions. Ms. Viviana and I hope that you will have enough material to encourage critical thinking in your IB and AP Spanish language students for at least 3 months.

HERE you can find a 22 pages FREE preview, each one including a reading and some activities. The complete resource has at least 4 different types of texts you can work with, plus activities. All readings, interviews, posters, etc have been elaborated by Ms. Viviana and I having your students Spanish language proficiency in mind.

HERE you can find the complete 105 pages full of readings and activities for you to start planning your 2020-2021 IB OR AP Spanish language classes. Ms. Viviana and I really hope you and your students find this resource important and valuable. Please let us know if you have any questions.
